To all NHS chief executives

19 March 2001

Dear colleagues,

The Prime Minister delivered a speech this morning to the Royal College of General Practitioners in which he praised the significant contribution made by all NHS staff in dealing with winter pressures.

The Winter Report 2001/2001 is now available on www.doh.gov.uk/winter/report.htm.

Personal message to all NHS staff from the Prime Minister

"I want to take this opportunity today to put on record to NHS and social care staff my appreciation for all their hard work over the winter period.

"There were considerable pressures on the NHS over the winter. In fact, in 14 out of 17 weeks this winter, hospitals coped with more emergency admissions than last year - however it was down to the hard work and dedication of staff that, for example very long waits for admission were still reduced by 75%.

"Extra resources and better preparations played their part in helping the NHS manage this pressure - and a highly successful flu immunisation programme with 65% of all people aged over 65 being immunised in England.

"But it was also the huge amount of personal effort and commitment shown by NHS staff across the board - GPs, social services, nurses, managers, hospital doctors and ambulance personnel, and many others that actually achieved this success.

"You rightly get praised when you respond so heroically and instinctively to disasters such as the Selby train crash. But you also deserve our thanks for the hard work that goes on day in and day out and so often passes unnoticed."
