NHS and social care interest

1. Publication of the response to the Isaacs Report

The response to the Isaacs Report is to be published shortly by the Department of Health, the Home Office and the Department for Education and Skills. The response will address the recommendations put forward in HM Inspector of Anatomy's report that was published in May 2003.

NHS interest

2. Publication of Saving Lives, Valuing Donors - a Transplant Framework for England

The Framework sets out key aims for organ and tissue transplantation over the next ten years.

Chief executives may wish to review their services in line with the national and international good practice outlined to optimise organ and tissue transplantation.

Social care interest

3. 2003/2004 Residential allowance special grant report

This report is now available along with the consultation document on the residential allowance transfer, which sets out the proposed amounts to be transferred to councils and the draft Local Authority Circular (LAC) which sets out guidance to councils on the transfer of residential allowance.

4. Mental health supplementary credit approvals

Councils with social services responsibility, (CSSRs), awarded mental health supplementary credit approvals, (MHSCA), for 2002-2004 and/or 2003-2004, are requested to formally confirm what will be spent on the designated projects before the end of March 2004.

This is to be done by completing the forecast of final out turn forms due back no later than 15 August 2003.

All CSSRs including those who were not awarded MHSCA for 2002-2004 and/or 2003-2004 can bid for any surplus resources, which must be spent by the end of March 2004. Return the bid for under-spend form by 15 August 2003.

8. National workforce strategy for estates and facilities staff
NHS Estates is working with NHS colleagues to develop a national workforce strategy for estates and facilities staff. The deadline for consultation on the document has been extended to 2 October 2003 for chief executives. Details at www.nhsestates.gov.uk/patient_environment/index.asp

10. Advance letter DOS 2/2003 - Gives the common pay scales for Community Dental Service (CDS) and salaried Personal Dental Services (PDS) dentists, and confirms increases to London weighting allowance, all effective from 1 April 2003.
