2. Processing of patient identifiable information
in countries outside the European Economic Agency (EEA) (Gateway reference
3807)
NHS chief executives are reminded that provisions within the Data Protection
Act (DPA)1998 regulate the transfer of personal data outside the european
economic area for transcription purposes, for example on paper records
converted to electronic format. In these circumstances, data controllers
must satisfy themselves that the receiving country will provide an adequate
level of protection for any data transferred. For most countries, this
will involve transfer on European Union (EU) approved contract terms.

3. Social worker registration with the General Social
Care Council (GSCC) (Gateway reference 3712)
From 1 April 2005, all qualified social workers operating on their local
authority's behalf will have to register with the General Social Care
Council (GSCC). Stephen Ladyman, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State
for Community, is writing to local council chief executives to request
that priority is given to encouraging registration. Applications should
reach the GSCC by 1 December 2004 if they are to be processed before 1

4. Lysosomal storage disorders - correction (Gateway
reference 3780)
From April 2005, certain centres will be nationally designated and funded
by the Department of Health under the auspices of the National Specialist
Commissioning Advisory Group (NSCAG) to provide a diagnosis and management
advice service for lysosomal storage disorders (including Gaucher's, Anderson-Fabrys's
and MPS1 diseases). The costs of enzyme replacement therapy will continue

5. The social care workforce: developing a new national
agenda (Gateway reference 3727)
In May 2004 the Department of Health hosted a ministerial conference that
focussed on the social care workforce strategies being developed by the
Government and employers. Speakers included Stephen Ladyman, Parliamentary
Under Secretary of State for Community, Margaret Hodge, Minister of State
for children, and Phil Hope, Parliamentary Under Secretary at the Office

6. NHS oral health surveys: an amendment to the core
programme (Gateway reference 3799)
The Chief Dental Officer has agreed an amendment with strategic health
authority (SHA) dental leads regarding the 2004/05 programme of NHS oral
health surveys undertaken by primary care trusts (PCTs). This should resolve
access issues in schools for undertaking the surveys and also improve
UK synchronisation. More at
