NHS and social care interest
1. Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosures on care
home, domiciliary care agency and nurses' agency staff - a consultation
(Gateway reference 2827)
The main proposal is that staff working in care homes, domiciliary care
and nurses' agencies will be enabled to start work prior to the satisfactory
completion of a CRB Disclosure. No changes are proposed in relation to
current requirements for CRB Disclosures for people working in children's
homes, schools or other children's services. The consultation runs from
5 March to 16 April 2004. Read

NHS interest
2. National Audit Office (NAO) examination of emergency
care in England (Gateway reference 2859)
The strategy for providing efficient and good quality emergency care in
England is being reviewed. The NAO is visiting selected trusts, surveying
emergency care networks and patients, analysing existing data and research,
and carrying out a census of all acute trusts.
The Department of Health considers the data collection to be useful and
reasonable - ROCR 203-108. Please complete the census by 2 April. Read

Social care interest
3. Special grant for the development of treatment foster
care programmes LASSL (2004)5 (Gateway reference 2903)
Councils with social services responsibilities (CSSRs) wishing to develop
a treatment foster care programme are invited to bid for a pump-priming
grant. The grant will assist with the introduction of specific intervention
for young people displaying anti-social behaviour and with severe behavioural
problems within a structured living environment. Local authorities should
only bid if they can meet the criteria identified in Annex A of the above

4. Mental Health Grant for the next financial year
(2004/05) (Gateway reference 2831)
All councils with social services responsibility (CSSRs) are alerted to
important information which includes Mental Health Grant allocation forms
that need to be completed and returned. The information also includes
details of the grant, its terms and conditions. Forms should be returned
to Andrew Armitage at Department of Health/NIMHE, 2nd Floor, Blenheim

This Act, which replaces the Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985,
was brought into force on 3 March 2004. LASSL (2004)4 outlines the provisions
