NHS and social care interest

1. NHS national E-recruitment service: Gateway reference 1851
The contract for implementation and management of the national online recruitment service was signed on Monday 11 August 2003 with Methods Application, an experienced business with previous experience of establishing the online NHS identity. They will work with Jobsite UK, who operates the UK's largest multi-sector e-recruitment site.

We are looking for NHS trusts to become pilot sites, which will be live autumn 2003, with national rollout in early 2004.

2. Medical device alert - MDA/2003/023 - Gateway reference 1860
Datex-ohmeda quick CAL calibration gas regulator. This medical device alert was issued on 8 August 2003 to NHS trusts for action.

3. Primary dental services guidance to PCTs: Gateway reference 1861
On 12 August 2003, health minister Rosie Winterton published guidance to PCTs on the implementation of local commissioning of primary dental services, subject to parliament, from April 2005.

To accompany the guidance, Incentive schemes directions also came into force on 12 August 2003, to enable PCTs to use main allocations, if necessary, to support dental services in the run up to 2005. Rosie Winterton and John Renshaw of the British Dental Association (BDA) have also written jointly to dental practices about the change.

4. Pay and contractual arrangements for NHS senior managers: Gateway reference 1837
The Department of Health's director of the health and social care delivery group John Bacon, invites views on a proposed new framework for the most senior NHS managers and issuing guidance on pay uplift for 2003/2004.

Chief executives are asked to ensure that the letter and proposed framework are brought to the attention of the chair of their organisation.

Comments on the proposed framework are invited by 30 September 2003 by using the database details of which will be notified shortly

5. The consultant contract ready reckoner: Gateway reference 1864
It has been identified that the ready reckoner for consultant salaries under the proposed new consultant contract contains some minor errors. We are working to resolve these problems and will inform the service as soon as they have been rectified.

6. Enhancing public protection - Proposals for the statutory regulation of operating department practitioners: Gateway reference 1844
The UK health departments propose to extend the current system of regulation of healthcare professionals to Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) by bringing them under the Health Professions Council (HPC).

Public consultation on a draft Section 60 Order and accompanying documentation will take place between 14 August 2003 and 14 November 2003.

7. Positron emission tomography (PET) scanning: Gateway reference 1831
Further to the note/article on PET scanning in the NHS detailed in last week's bulletin this note/addendum highlights that local health communities may wish to take account of the development of the framework before reaching decisions on the local provision of PET scanning.

8. National pilot of Your Life magazine for primary care trusts: Gateway reference 1849
The Department of Health is supporting a national pilot of Your Life'- an NHS branded health magazine targeting those in lower income groups. Building on six successful PCT led pilots, the DH will be funding the development of national content, enabling PCTs to choose from different degrees of localisation at a reduced cost.

PCTs are encouraged to join the pilot for the winter edition of Your Life, which will be produced in partnership with Dr Foster. Evaluation of the pilot will take place at the end of the year.

9. MOD/NHS partnership initiative: Gateway reference 1868
In August 2002 a small integrated medical team (IMT) from the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust deployed to Bosnia in support of the UK MOD.

The MOD are now looking to extend the scheme and are looking for trained medical and nursing specialists including general surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre nurses, ITU and A&E nurses. It is intended to hold a briefing session for NHS chief executives in late September and would seek to include HR, medical and nursing directors in this.

11. Modern social services: a commitment to the future: Gateway reference 1850
The 12th annual report of the chief inspector social services inspectorate 2002-2003 CI(2003)10

This year's chief inspector's annual report draws on a range of inspection and performance review activity of the social services inspectorate (SSI), to provide an assessment of performance of councils with social services responsibilities across England. The report illustrates regional highlights and provides information about the activities of SSI.

14. Local optical committees (LOCs): Gateway reference 1866
Powers to establish LOCs derive from, in England, section 44(B2) of the NHS Act 1977 ("the Act"). A model constitution for LOCs was issued some years ago and is now in process of being revised.

16. Screening for infectious diseases in pregnancy: standards to support the UK antenatal screening programme Gateway reference 1859
These generic and disease-specific standards, published this week, cover screening for rubella antibody, syphilis, HIV and hepatitis B and provide a standardised tool for local audit and performance management.

17. GPs with a Special Interest: Gateway reference 1873
The NHS Plan commitment for 1,000 GPs with a Special Interest (GPwSIs) by 2004 has been met. There are now some 1,250 GPwSIs delivering extended services such as dermatology, ENT, musculo-skeletal and endoscopy.
