NHS and social care interest

1. New measures to reduce and control the flow of communications issued to the NHS and social care organisations (Gateway reference 3097)

From May 2004 all non-urgent communications will be batched and issued once a month. This will replace the existing ad-hoc system. Quotas limiting the volume of communications issued will also be introduced. A number of other government departments already successfully employ similar systems.

Chief executives are asked to ensure that all staff are made aware of the new distribution arrangements and batching dates.

3. A responsive and high-quality NHS - primary care progress report 2004 (Gateway reference 2970)

This report was presented by David Colin-Thome, national clinical director for primary care. It outlines the service improvements and expansion in primary care since publication of The NHS Plan and sets out how PCTs are expected to improve and expand local services in the years ahead. It acknowledges that all achievements in this area have crucially depended on the hard work and commitment of the staff – doctors, nurses, managers and others – who deliver primary care.

An amended set of directions on the NHS complaints procedure has been issued to address this change.
