NHS interest
1. NHS performance ratings (Gateway reference 3522)
The Healthcare Commission will publish the 2003-4 NHS performance ratings
on 21 July for primary care trusts, acute, specialist, mental health,
and ambulance trusts. The Commission will give organisations access to
their ratings on 19 July and will brief the media on 20 July.

2. Increased pay and allowances for dental public

3. Reform of NHS complaints procedure (Gateway
reference 3527)
The NHS (Complaints) Regulations were issued on 9 July and come into force
on 30 July 2004. The regulations shift responsibility for the independent
review of complaints to the Healthcare Commission and introduce some minor
changes to the existing local resolution procedure. Organisations will
need to consider the requirements brought in by the regulations and amend
local policies where appropriate. Read

Social care interest
4. The Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) scheme
will commence on 26 July 2004 (Gateway reference 3515)
Directors of social services and chief executives of care trusts are asked
to ensure that their own staff, particularly adult protection co-ordinators
and human resource managers, as well as local registered providers of
care homes and domiciliary care agencies, employment agencies and businesses
who supply care workers to such services, are made aware of the guidance
as soon as possible. Chief executives of primary care trusts and NHS trusts
will wish to wish to note the guidance in preparation for future NHS applications.

5. National Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service
(CAMHs) mapping (Gateway reference 3526. ROCR/OR/0016/002)
The details of next year's mapping will include: an overall process letter,
a checklist of relevant organisation's responsibilities, a questionnaire
and accuracy checklist for strategic health authority CAMHs leads to return
by the end of July.
Chief executives and directors of social services are asked to share this
information with CAMHs partnerships and relevant strategic groups. Staff
attendance at a regional workshop will be key to providing details of
the 2004 process and will explain how to get the most out of the database.

9. The futurebuilders fund application window
is now open (Gateway reference 3532)
Futurebuilders, the voluntary and community sector (VCS) fund,
opened for applications on 5 July 2004 and aims to make early investments
from September 2004 onwards. Applicants in the VCS who are 'investment

10. Ethnic Disparities in Health and Health Care

The Department of Health and London Health Observatory have produced a
review of studies into ethnic disparities in health and health care, including
examples of good practice where disparities are being addressed. The review

11. Consultation on working time opt out (Gateway

The Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) are conducting a preliminary

Sir Nigel Crisp has launched an interactive, corporate induction programme.
Produced by NHSU in consultation with the Department of Health and the
NHS, it is aimed at all new starters working in, for and with the NHS.
