1. Ethics review of social care research: options appraisal and guidelines (Gateway reference 3640)
This public consultation describes a number of options for a national system of ethics review in social care and seeks views on their respective strengths and weaknesses. Comments are welcomed from social care research and practice communities, including service users, carers and their organisations. The closing date is 31 December 2004. Read the consultation

An independent evaluation of the joint Department of Health and Macmillan primary care cancer leads project was published in June 2004. The evaluation sets out key findings and recommendations about the future of this role. The publication supports primary care trusts (PCTs) and primary care service providers in meeting Disability Discrimination Act requirements. 5. Improving the safety of spinal injury patients (Gateway reference 3509)
The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) has announced steps to improve the safety of patients with established spinal cord injuries during hospital stays. The guidance addresses the role of manual bowel evacuation as part of routine bowel care. More at www.npsa.nhs.uk/advice

7. Care services efficiency delivery programme (CSEDP) (Gateway reference 3840)
CSEDP will support implementation of recommendations made by the independent review of public sector efficiency. The programme will work in partnership with local councils, the NHS and service providers. More information >

8. Up-dated version of the mental health emergency care checklist (Gateway reference 3810)

11. Implementing changes to 999 call categorisation (Gateway reference 3719)
The Department of Health has issued a definitive list of call determinants for Category C to underpin the move to local performance monitoring from 1 October 2004. There are also new determinants for Category A and B, which will take effect from 1 April 2005. Further details >

12. First NHS language and translation framework (Gateway reference 3837)
From 1 October 2004, NHS Direct will provide a new telephone interpreting and translation service for its callers. This will act as a framework for the rest of the NHS. More information >
