2. Clinical Leaders for NPfIT (Gateway reference
4165)
The GP, hospital doctor and nurse clinical leaders have been appointed
for the NPfIT programme. Professor Mike Pringle and Dr Gillian Braunold
will share the GP leader role, while Mr Ian Scott and DR Simon Eccles
will share the hospital doctor leader role. Heather Drabble will be the
nursing leader. The AHP leader is expected to be announced shortly. Biographies

3. Healthcare Industries Task Force (HITF) report
(Gateway reference 4028)
The task force is the first joint strategic initiative of its kind - set
up a year ago to deliver a programme to benefit patients and the NHS,
to stimulate UK science and industry, and to improve growth in manufacturing,
investment, employment and exports. The report was launched 17 November.

4. Chief medical officer's letter on preventing transmission
of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) through surgical instruments (Gateway
reference 4147)
This letter reports progress on the tonsillectomy audit commissioned by
the Department of Health and outlines further work commissioned from NICE
on the choice of instruments in tonsillectomies and other procedures.

5. Two European directives on blood safety become
law on 8 February 2005 (Gateway reference 3998)
Hospital blood banks must satisfy requirements around quality systems,
reporting adverse events and record keeping by 8 November 2005. A working
group will issue guidance on the implications in due course. Draft regulations
and consultation are available.

6. Consultation to form a care services improvement
partnership (Gateway reference 4035)
The partnership will bring together seven existing initiatives providing
service improvement, covering children, learning disabilities, mental
health, older people and physical disability. It is proposed the partnership

9. PCT indicative dental budgets - 2004-5 and 2005-6

The department will conduct a further review of indicative allocations
in early 2005-6, taking into account access and new personal dental services
(PDS) conversions in 2004-5, to ensure that every PCT is adequately funded
to meet their confirmed service commitments.

rails and curtain rails in psychiatric inpatient settings via SABS system
(Gateway reference 4070)
Risk - suicide/potential suicide. Mental health trusts are reminded of
their obligations to comply with the instruction to remove all non-collapsible
bed and shower curtain rails in psychiatric inpatient settings as per
the chief medical officer's 2000 report An organisation with a memory.
