NHS and social care interest


1. NHS LIFT - applications for a 4th wave (Gateway reference 3407)
The Department of Health (DH) wishes to identify a fourth wave of NHS LIFT. Strategic health authorities (SHAs) are requested to co-ordinate expressions of interest from their local PCTs. Organisations expressing an interest in LIFT must complete an application form which should be returned to their SHA no later than 20 August 2004. SHAs are asked to e-mail the completed applications to the DH at mb-pfic@doh.gsi.gov.uk by 17 September 2004.

2. Essential capabilities for the mental health workforce - call for examples in racial equality from chief executives in mental health trusts (Gateway reference 3390)
Work to define the essential capabilities required to achieve best practice for education and training of all staff who work in mental health is nearing completion. As part of the implementation strategy the team is focusing on Race Equality as the first national priority. Read more >

3. Consultation - a draft Memorandum of Understanding (Gateway reference 3461)
This asks health care workers for their views on a protocol for liaison and effective communications between the NHS, the police and the Health and Safety Executive when investigating patient safety incidents ie unexpected death or serious untoward harm. Read the document >

4. Point of clarification (Gateway reference 3436)
To clarify the point in last week's bulletin about the September conferences for NHS and social care leaders, all NHS chief executives and all directors of social services will receive a personal invitation to this event. The Association of Directors of Social Services will help with the mailing to directors. NHS chief executives will be invited to bring their lead doctor and lead nurse. Nigel Crisp will also invite leaders from across government and local government to join the events. Invitations will be sent out by the end of July. If you have not received an invitation by that date, please contact clare.mullen@doh.gsi.gov.uk

5. Hepatitis C action plan for England and Hepatitis C health care professional information pack (Gateway reference 2945 and 3234)
The action plan is intended to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis C. It will be supported by professional and public awareness campaigns and is at www.dh.gov.uk/cmo

6. Building on the Best: End of Life Care Initiative (Gateway reference 3463)
Following the Secretary of State's announcement of a £12m investment over three years to improve care for people coming to the end of their lives, each NHS strategic health authority will receive weighted capitation funding to address local need.

7. The Improving Working Lives national audit instrument for practice plus (Gateway reference 3291)
This new CD-Rom carries a self-assessment tool and resource pack to support NHS employers who are working in partnership with their staff to achieve this third level of Improving Working Lives (IWL) accreditation.
