1. Modernising NHS Dentistry - Implementing the NHS Plan: Briefing Dentists And NHS Managers

The Government's Strategy for NHS Dentistry was published on Tuesday 19th September. It sets out new approaches to the tasks of providing and managing NHS primary care dental services, and gives new powers and responsibilities to Health Authorities, working with PCGs and PCTs and, most importantly, with the dental profession locally.

Ministers wish to ensure that both NHS managers and local dentists understand the content and significance of the Strategy. Chief Executives of Health Authorities, Chief Executives of Primary Care Trusts and Chief Executives of NHS Trusts providing Community and/or Personal Dental Services are asked to ensure appropriate briefing of staff in both dentistry and primary care more widely, as well as of their Boards where relevant.

Two PowerPoint presentations have been placed on the internet which may help in briefing staff. The full presentation Dental Strategy full.ppt is most likely to be of interest to an audience closely involved in dental services provision or management, including audiences of dentists. There is also a cut-down version Dental Strategy mgt.ppt which excludes some of the slides of more detailed interest, and which may be more appropriate for a senior non-specialist management audience.

In addition to the above, Lord Hunt will shortly be writing to invite Chairmen, Chief Executives, Primary Care Leads and Dentistry leads to a conference on 30 October, in London, where the strategy and plans will be set out in more detail. A series of regional conferences will take place in November/ December.

The strategy, supporting information and presentations can be accessed at http://www.doh.gov.uk/dental/strategy

Ref. 22266 The Strategy Document Modernising NHS Dentistry: Progress & Potential. Will be mailed to HA Chief Executives and Directors of Public Health & NHS Trust Chief Executives. Hard copies available.

2. Advisory Committee on Genetic Testing - Publication of Third Annual Report and Compendium of Guidance

The Third Annual Report of the Advisory Committee on Genetic Testing (ACGT) has been published. This summarises the activities of the Committee in 1999 including publication of a joint consultation document on pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and preparation of a draft report on prenatal genetic testing. The report also includes a Compendium of guidance previously issued by ACGT including testing for late onset genetic disorders, genetic tests supplied direct to the public and advice to Research Ethics Committees.

Following a review of the Government's advisory framework for biotechnology, ACGT has now been subsumed into the new Human Genetics Commission which has taken over responsibility for the ongoing work of ACGT.

The report is available on the DH webpages at www.doh.gov.uk/genetics/acgt.htm or from the Genetics Secretariat at genetics-policy@doh.gsi.gov.uk or Room 652C, Skipton House, 80 London Road, LONDON SE1 6LH.

3. Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Blood and Tissues for Transplantation, MSBT

This guidance updates and replaces the 'Guidance on the Microbiological Safety of Human Tissues and Organs used in Transplantation' issued in 1996 by the Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Blood and Tissues for Transplantation (MSBT). The role of MSBT is to reduce to a minimum the risk of transmission of infection through transplantation.
