Bulletin:NHS and social care interest No items this week 1. How do we get an NHS that is continually improving? (Gateway reference 3140) Ministers have asked the NHS Modernisation Agency to work with key stakeholders on the design of the next phase of the NHS improvement system. A concept paper has been published which considers future opportunities in the light of improvement methods which have delivered tangible benefits for patients. What processes, relationships and structures should be developed at local, SHA and national levels to achieve an NHS improvement system that is fit for purpose? Safety Alert Broadcast System (SABS) (Gateway reference 3142) From 26 April 2004 nominated liaison officers in each NHS organisation will receive new safety alerts by e-mail, with an electronic response form attached to confirm action taken. Chief executives will continue to be notified when alerts are issued via the Chief Executives' Bulletin in the further Interest section. Event – Futurebuilders’ national launch to the voluntary and public sectors (Gateway reference 3159) Futurebuilders is a £125 million Government fund which aims to improve public service delivery in England through investment in voluntary and community organisations. This launch event is designed to inform those organisations considering making applications. 4. Modernising Medical Careers: The Next Steps – The Future Shape of Foundation, Specialist and General Practice Training Programmes (Gateway reference 2893) This document sets out the agreed framework for moving forward to reform medical training across the UK. Contact andrew.matthewman@doh.gsi.gov.uk 5. NHS Live 2004 update (Gateway reference 3155) Over 350 organisations are already actively participating in the programme. The NHS Live leaders met for the first time on 7 April to learn more about the purpose and aims of NHS Live and what each organisation will be expected to deliver. 6. New partnership for NHSU and Leadership Centre (Gateway reference 3154) By establishing a School of Leadership, Management and Improvement within NHSU, many of the Leadership Centre's current programmes are expected to transfer to the new school which will develop new programmes to meet the needs of health and social care. More at www.nhsu.nhs.uk/news/ 7. Secondment opportunities in primary care (Gateway reference 3157) Two posts are available to a PCT chief executive or an experienced PCT director. They offer an opportunity to develop national policy with Ministers and senior Department managers and use NHS experience to further improve relations between the NHS and DH. 8. DEVICE BULLETIN – MDA DB2004 (02) (Gateway reference 3148) Guidance on the Stability of Wheelchairs The MHRA has published the following guidance document: DB 2004(02) ‘Guidance on the Stability of Wheelchairs’. The guidance is at www.mhra.gov.uk 9. MEDICAL DEVICE ALERT – MDA/2004/017 (Gateway reference 3149) External/temporary cardiac pacemaker: APC Medical model 4170. MEDICAL DEVICE ALERT – MDA/2004/018 (Gateway reference 3150) Comark Diligence EV thermocouple data loggers: models N2004 and N2014: serial numbers below 11030200.
