The nursing task group's analysis of education and development beyond
nurse registration is now available. Comments are invited by 15 November
2004.

2. Hospital cleaning (Gateway reference 3572)
Trust chief executives are reminded of Sir Nigel Crisp's letter in bulletin
228 concerning appropriate systems to prevent and control infection. Trusts
are expected to respond to Yvonne.Coghill@doh.gsi.gov.uk
by 1 September.

3. Local authority circular (LAC) (2004)24 - the community care assessment
directions (Gateway reference 3717)
New directions, in effect from 1 September 2004, will place existing good
practice and guidance on conducting care assessments and care planning
into a legal framework.

4. Paying the price: a consultation paper on prostitution (Gateway
reference 3728)
The Home Office is inviting comment from primary care trusts (PCTs), particularly
on the provision of health services for those involved in prostitution.

5. Agenda for change (Gateway references 3614,

Final drafts of the agenda for change agreement and supporting documents
will be distributed to the shadow NHS staff council on 2 September and
published as soon as possible afterwards.

6. Making IT work (Gateway reference 3724)
A new issue of the national programme for IT newsletter has been published,
providing updates, views and information. The NHS confederation has also
issued a briefing on the NHS care records service.

7. NHS appraisal scheme for GPs (Gateway reference

Primary care trusts (PCTs) should now introduce a scheme for GP non-principals.

8. The statistical summary guardianship under the mental

9. Health and social care information centre (Gateway
reference 3753)
A new, customer-focussed special health authority will begin work on 1
April 2005. It will rationalise data collections and facilitate data flows
between users, commissioners and suppliers. Recruitment for a 'shadow'
board will begin in September.

12. Tackling tobacco in England conference, 22 -
24 November 2004 (Gateway reference 3742)
This conference will provide valuable information for anyone involved
in tackling issues of disease and ill-health caused by tobacco use. This
includes those with a high level/strategic overview through to those working
within a specific area with specialist and technical skills.

13. In-house manufacture of in vitro diagnostic devices
(IVDs) (Gateway reference 3741)
MHRA has received many enquiries from chief executives about the application
of the IVD Directive to the manufacture of IVDs by health institutions.
MHRA has sought legal advice on the various matters raised and has issued
up-dated guidance.
