1. Staff thanked for success of winter (Gateway

Secretary of State for Health John Reid and National Clinical Director
for Emergency Access Professor Sir George Alberti have published a report
that praises the contribution NHS staff made to handling winter so successfully.
The report noted that winter used to be dealt with as a special event,
but is now efficiently handled as part of the everyday business of the
NHS and social care. Read

3. Secretary of State's directions on security management
measures (Gateway reference 2952)
The structure for implementing the strategy outlined in A Professional
Approach to the Management of Security in the NHS has been launched. A
key element of the structure is the introduction of the Local Security
Management Specialists (LSMS) to each health body. The LSMS will become
the focal point for the local delivery of professional security management
work, and will be supported by professional, specialist guidance and advice
from the NHS Counter Fraud and Security Management Service.

4. 2004/05 NHS key targets and constructions (Gateway
reference 2996)
The Commission for Health Improvement has published the methodology that
will be used for PCTs and NHS Trusts in the 2004/2005 performance rating

5. New commission to promote improvement in the quality
of NHS and independent health care in England and Wales (Gateway reference
3014)
The Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection launches on 1 April.
To be known as the Healthcare Commission, it will replace CHI, take over
the private and voluntary health care functions of the National Care Standards
Commission and pick up elements of the Audit Commission's work relating
to health care. The Healthcare Commission will measure whether NHS services
in England are meeting Department of Health standards.
The Healthcare Commission wants your views on its corporate plan for 2004-2008
called Informing, Inspecting, Improving. From 1 April, the plan will be
at www.healthcarecommission.org.uk

6. Mental Health Supported Capital Expenditure (Revenue)
(2004/05) Guidance LAC (2004)10 (Gateway reference 3009)
All councils with social services responsibility are alerted to important
information which includes Mental Health Supported Capital Expenditure
(Revenue) (MHSEC(R)) allocation forms. These forms need to be completed
and returned. The information includes details of the allocations and
their terms and conditions. Forms should be returned to Andrew Armitage

7. Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC) -
2004/05 (Gateway reference 2344. ROCR/OR/0042/003)
Chief executives of all trusts are notified of the reduced information
requirements to complete the ERIC return for 2004/05. Please note this
should not be confused with the 2003/04 return that is currently being
collected. The ERIC web-enabled data entry and reporting system will continue
to be used as for previous years. The completion notes for 2004/05 can

9. Event - Choosing Health? Closing the gap on inequalities
(Gateway reference 3015)
This event will feed in to the consultation for the White Paper on public
health. As such it is an opportunity to debate the challenges, identify
solutions to health inequalities and share good practice. To be held on

11. National Audit Office census questionnaire on
emergency care (Gateway reference 2859)
[Ref entry in bulletin 209] Questionnaires already returned have been
much appreciated. The remainder must be returned by 2 April. Please note
that Question 11 should not include Medical Admission Units or Clinical
Decision Units unless they are classified as part of A&E itself.

14. Self assessment tool for child protection for
clinical teams (Gateway reference 3010)
This tool has been published by the Commission for Health Improvement
(CHI) for clinical teams across all types of NHS organisation to regularly

15. Extension of choice for heart patients (Gateway
reference 3008)
The Government has extended choice for cardiac patients. From 1 April
2005, patients will become eligible to choose an alternative provider
of bypass surgery, angioplasty and valve surgery at the point of referral
by their cardiologist following angiography. More information will follow.

21. Cervical screening call and recall: Guide To
