1. Election guidance
Elections to the European Parliament, local elections in England and Wales and elections to the Greater London Authority (GLA) will be held on 10 June. Any work to be undertaken which may have a bearing on these elections should be looked at in the light of guidance on the role and conduct of NHS, local authority and DH personnel. The guidance is on the Cabinet Office website. The general convention is that particular care should be taken three weeks preceding the elections - from 20 May 2004 - and this should be taken into account in forward planning any activities and announcements.
The guidance is at
www.cabinet-office.gov.uk/central/Electionguidance/2004electionguidance.pdf

3. Obtaining blood transfusion information (Gateway reference 3313)
The Secretary of State's statement in Parliament on 16 March said that patients who had received a blood transfusion since January 1980 should no longer give blood. Some individual donors have been attempting to verify their status by requesting a search of their medical records. Some Trusts have been charging for this additional work. The NHS relies on the continued voluntary donation of blood. Charging for such searches is effectively charging a fee to donate blood. Trusts should ensure that any such search should not generate a fee.
