2. PCT action to secure out-of-hours training for GP registrars (Gateway reference 3073)
When commissioning new GP out-of-hours services, PCTs are asked to work with local GP deaneries to ensure there continues to be appropriate training opportunities for GP registrars. Please see letter to PCT chief executives >

3. National Audit Office (NAO) report on the NHS (England) summarised accounts 2002-03 (Gateway reference 3181)
The comptroller and auditor general has published his report and the summarised accounts of the NHS. Individual health bodies with large in-year or cumulative deficits are named in the report which may result in local media interest. 4. Mandatory surveillance of orthopaedic surgical site infection and C. difficile associated diarrhoea (ROCR/OR/0037/002 / Gateway reference 3156)
This surveillance is now part of the mandatory health care-associated infection surveillance system.
SSI: All hospital trusts or NHS facilities undertaking specified orthopaedic procedures must participate. Collaboration between infection control teams and orthopaedic surgeons and training of designated staff is required.
Action required:
1. Chief executives should ensure that a person responsible for SSI surveillance has been identified and has contacted CDSC to register (ssi@hpa.org.uk)
2. The trust microbiology laboratory routinely reports data according to the recommendations of the National Clostridium difficile standards group.

Social care interest
5. Independent review mechanism becomes operational on 30 April 2004 (Gateway reference 3187)
This mechanism gives prospective adopters the right to refer their case to an independent review panel when their adoption agency proposes not to approve them as suitable to adopt. More at www.children.doh.gov.uk/adoption/Irm.htm

6. LAC (2004)15 Use of the NHS strategic tracing service (NSTS) by councils with social services responsibilities (CSSRS) (Gateway reference 3186)
This circular gives details of arrangements for CSSRs with access to the NHS Strategic Tracing Service. This will enable CSSRs to obtain and validate NHS numbers for current users of social services and will allow health and social service records to be linked for initiatives integrating services such as the Single Assessment Process and the Electronic Social Care Record.

12. Revisions to the Single Assessment Process (SAP) website (Gateway reference 3169)
The revised website now has a letter from Antony Sheehan to chief executives of SHAs reminding them of their role in implementing SAP. A template to audit progress up to the 1 April 2004 milestone has also been uploaded as has a revised explanation of the Single Assessment Summary and news of another fully accredited tool.
