NHS and social care interest
1. New consultation document on Hepatitis B infected
health care workers and oral antiviral therapy (Gateway reference
3442)
This document invites opinion on guidance from the Advisory Group on Hepatitis,
which states that under specified conditions health care workers with
hepatitis B should be allowed to perform exposure- prone procedures while
taking oral antiviral drug therapy. The closing date for comments is 22

2. Criminal record bureau (CRB) checks on GPs
(Gateway reference 3482)
Directions and information for primary care trusts (PCTs) and strategic
health authorities (SHAs) on the special exercise to obtain enhanced disclosures
from GPs who have not yet been subject to them.

3. Cancer peer review letter (Gateway reference
3589)
Mike Richards, National Cancer Director, is seeking support from NHS trusts,
NHS foundation trusts, primary care trusts (PCTs) and strategic health
authorities (SHAs). He urges chief executives to encourage relevant staff
to put their names forward for cancer peer review and approve time away

Social care interest
4. Prospective adopters being assessed to adopt under
the Hague Convention (Gateway reference 3592)
From 20 August 2004, adopters will have the right to refer cases to an
independent review panel if their agencies do not approve adoption. Further

5. Extra care housing fund (Gateway reference

Local authorities with social services responsibilities are invited to
submit bids for the second round of the extra care housing fund. There
is £40.2 million available, including £2.32m for learning

7. The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) today
alerted the NHS to the risks associated with oral methotrexate (Gateway
reference 3449)
To help primary care and acute trusts reduce risk locally, the organisation
has launched a three-pronged solution. The NPSA maintains that oral methotrexate
is a safe and effective medication if administered and monitored appropriately.

This alert was issued on 23 June 2004 following notification of failure
to decontaminate certain types of flexible endoscope. Trusts are asked
to undertake an assessment of their procedures for endoscope decontamination.
The deadline for completion of action points is 18 August 2004. Chief
