NHS and social care interest

1. Common assessment framework (CAF) - consultation (Gateway reference 3690)
The Green Paper, 'Every Child Matters', proposes the introduction of a CAF as part of a strategy for helping children and young people achieve five priority outcomes. The practical design, application and management of a CAF raises complex issues, which must be resolved before a specific proposal can be agreed and implemented nationally. 2. Achieving timely 'simple' discharge from hospital - a toolkit for the multidisciplinary team (Gateway reference 3573)
This toolkit aids progress in achieving the four-hour accident and emergency total time target and a patient-centred emergency care service. 3. The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) alert for every NHS hospital to implement alcohol-based hand rub at the point of care by April 2005 (Gateway reference 3674)
The NPSA has announced the first national campaign to encourage hand cleaning by hospital staff in order to reduce infection. More at www.npsa.nhs.uk/advice

5. Regulations against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, religion or belief (Gateway reference 3650)

6. Domestic violence and the NHS: 'challenges for change' conference, 20 October 2004 (Gateway reference 3762)
This is aimed at health professionals of all levels. It will launch new government approaches to

7. National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) prioritisation consultation (Gateway reference 3761)
Following consultation, the NPSA has determined a process for prioritising its work in developing solutions to patient safety issues. Guidance on submitting issues of personal interest and becoming a member of the advisory panel who will review submission is at www.npsa.nhs.uk/prioritisation

8. The general practitioner with special interest (GPwSI) in genetics (Gateway reference 3628)
The Department of Health has recently advertised the opportunity to apply for central funding for GPwSI posts in genetics. Applications from primary care trusts (PCTs) should be made by 29 October. 9. Confidentiality and disclosure of information: code of practice for general medical services (GMs), personal medical services (PMS) and alternative provider medical services (APMS) (Gateway reference 3202)
This code sets out guidance on the confidentiality of patient information held by GMs, PMS and APMS contractors and access by and disclosure of that information to primary care trusts (PCTs).

10. Lysosomal storage disorders (Gateway reference 3780)
From April 2005, the Department of Health will select and fund certain centres under the guidance of
