Special alert
Many individuals in a number of NHS organisations have received an e-mail from "Concerned Friend" <Staff@gmas.nhsdirect.nhs.uk> with the subject An Open Letter to NHS staff. The message in the e-mail is party political and an abuse of NHS resources. Furthermore the header has been forged and is nothing to do with NHS Direct. The co-operation of all chief executives in minimising the spread of this offensive message would be appreciated by urging staff to neither open nor forward it. Local SHA Communications teams have already begun to alert trusts of its existence and all efforts are being made to track down its source.

2. Sexual Offences Act (Gateway reference 3337)
A circular is being issued to notify local authorities, voluntary adoption agencies and independent fostering agencies that the Sexual Offences Act 2003 came into force on 1 May 2004. The Act overhauls the sexual offences framework and includes provisions to give children the greatest possible protection against sexual abuse and exploitation. Local authorities and agencies should inform their relevant staff of the Act coming into force. See LAC(2004)17 on the DfES website www.dfes.gov.uk/adoption and on the Department of Health website >
