The Renal National Service Framework The Department of Health is developing a National Service Framework (NSF) to improve renal services, and we have launched an interactive website at www.doh.gov.uk/nsf/renal.htm. You will find information there about the scope of the NSF and who is in our External Reference Group. More importantly, you can give us your views by contributing to the discussion area or by suggesting a standard for inclusion in the NSF. We would like to hear all points of view, whether you provide the service, use it, or just feel strongly about some aspect of it. If you do not have access to the internet, you can still write to us: please address your letters to Ms Jane Verity, Renal NSF, Department of Health, Room 407 Wellington House, 133-155 Waterloo Road, London SE1 8UG.
Free Nursing Care to Nursing Homes, and Associated Equipment Provision Since the implementation of the provisions for free nursing care in nursing homes in England, the Department of Health has become aware of concerns about the provision of:
According to the National Association of Equipment Providers (NAEP) many services have been reporting a rise in demand for the above products as a result of the assessments for free nursing care. Further information is available at www.doh.gov.uk/jointunit/freenursingcare.
Ward Housekeepers Ward Housekeeper Workshops have been held in all Regions and have prompted a number of projects:
Approximately 1000 delegates have attended one of the Regional Ward Housekeeping workshops held throughout the year. The attendees included nurses, domestics, caterers, patients, hotel services and estates. These workshops have been designed specifically to help inform Trusts about the flexibility of the role of the Housekeeper and the impact they may have when working with the ward teams for the benefit of patients. A comprehensive Housekeeping Guide is shortly to be published on the NHS Estates Website www.nhsestates.co.uk/discussions. This guide includes a number of best practice examples from Trusts that already have Housekeepers working within their hospitals. As well as offering practical guidance for Trusts thinking about establishing a Housekeeping service the guide also contains advice for project managers with the responsibility for introducing Housekeepers into a Trust. The NHS Estates Patient Environment Discussion Board is now available for all interested parties on the website. This discussion board has Ward Housekeeping as one of the discussion forums and encourages questions and ideas surrounding Housekeeper issues to be shared easily. A further 140 Trusts and PCTs have been given £50k each as funding to be used in developing Housekeeping services. These Trusts and PCTs either have some form of housekeeping service in operation or have robust plans to introduce the service. A short film is being distributed to all Trust Chief Executives. It is hoped that this film will be used to inform Trusts boards and hospital personnel about the flexibility of the Housekeeper role. It may be useful as a first step in helping to answer initial questions and help ward teams to understand how the Housekeeper may compliment and assist ward teams in their delivery of services for the benefit of patients. Nurse Directors will need to work closely with Facilities Managers and other to ensure that all options are examined to secure this important new form of support for ward nurses.
