Dear Sir / Madam, GENERIC MEDICINES Lord Hunt, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Health, today announced the start of a review of the statutory maximum price scheme for generic medicines and launched a discussion paper setting out the Government’s proposals for supply and reimbursement of generic medicines in the longer-term. Details of the review are set out in the attached Consultation Document titled "Review of the Statutory Maximum Price Scheme for Generic Medicines sold to Community Pharmacies and Dispensing Doctors". This invites interested parties to contribute to the review and formally consults on the Government’s proposals for rolling the scheme forward pending decisions on arrangements for the longer term. The Government’s proposals for the longer term are set out in the attached Discussion Paper titled "Options for the Future Supply and Reimbursement of Generic Medicines for the NHS". The paper –

OXERA’s report of the fundamental review of the generic medicines market is also available on the internet at the same address. A list of those to whom this letter and the two documents for comment have been sent is in the annex to the letter. The issues on which views are invited and deadlines for receipt of comments are as follows - by Friday 14 September 2001:
by Monday 22 October 2001 :the Government’s assessment of existing arrangements for supply and reimbursement, and proposed options for the longer term (set out in the Discussion Paper). Views are also invited on any other options which have the potential to meet the Government’s objectives the initial comparison of the costs to business of complying with the options for the longer term (set out in the partial RIA) in response to the formal consultation on the proposed collection of monthly sales / purchase data for a sample of preparations, as well as the cost of compliance with the proposal (set out in section 7 of the Discussion Paper and the partial RIA) Specific questions on which comments are invited are listed in the documents. We would welcome comments from interested parties.
